Top 10 Technologies for Internet Businesses

Technology is a critical success factor for any online marketing home-based business, but typically “newbie” internet marketers don’t have a good knowledge of the technologies necessary or how it will impact their establishment.

These ten recommendations ought to help you get started well. Whenever possible, try to launch systems and processes that work together easily, and are available 100% of the time to help customers and prospects.

Build a computerized system if you want to make your work uncomplicated and your bottom line strong.

1. Computer & Peripherals

If you want to do internet marketing, you’ll clearly need a computer of some sort - preferably one of your own, either a desktop model or a laptop. Get one with plenty of memory and speed. A broadband connection is desireable rather than dial-up. You’ll also need a printer. If you can, get both with wireless capabilities.

2. Your Custom Domain

Be certain to buy a website name that you own, so that you can begin~start} to create your own personal or business stamp. Moreover, many advertising platforms will not allow you to include an affiliate website, but only a website name that you personally own. A good quality website name will be concise (30 characters or less), sensible to the eye and the ear, and indicative of your product or service. The most favored names end in “.com” and those are preferred for most affiliate marketing businesses, provided they’re available.

3. Telecommunications

One more basic tool is communications, including an ISP and a phone - either land-line, cellular, or VOIP, with or without headset - as you prefer. It should have both local and long distance features, and if you plan to hold meetings for your downline, the ability to handle conference calls. If you’re going to do teleseminars, etc., you’ll most likely want to invest in a teleconferencing service that can run many, perhaps hundreds or even a thousand, callers simultaneously.

4. Web Hosting

You’ll have to have a hosting service to provide a “home” for your website. There are many such companies on hand to meet the needs of home businesses and online marketers. Their capabilities do vary somewhat, as do their costs, so make sure to comparison shop before making a purchase.

5. Systems & Info Precautions

You’ll also want robust precautions for your applications and information. This includes physical security, plus technologies such as firewalls, and security applications like McAfee or Norton.

6. Systems & Info Backup/Restore Programs

Another necessary, but frequently overlooked, need is for backup of your locally resident applications and information. In spite of other security measures, there will eventually come a time when you undergo a system crash, with either partial or complete loss of data and required programs. Consequently you will also need a healthy backup and restore capability.

7. Products

You’ll want one or more services to sell - goods that you have developed yourself, or ones that have been created by one or more third parties. If you create your own products, then you’ll also have to worry about all the associated back office capabilities. If you get your products from others, then you’ll have to worry about supply relationship management, ensuring that required products get shipped on time, customers are satisfied and that you get properly paid.

8. Affiliate Network

If you’re intending to advertise various affiliate products, you’ll doubtless also want to join one or more Affilate Program Networks (APNs), such as ClickBank, Commission Junction, or LinkShare, etc. to handle your commissions, sales statistics, and other back office functions for you.

9. Web 2.0 Features

The Net is constantly changing, so if you want to be successful in today’s online world, you’ll want sites and services that support blogging and social communities (i.e., ones that use Web 2.0 to facilitate a whole host of participation, using the web as the network platform).

10. Technical Support

Lastly - again a often overlooked necessity - is the need for first-rate technical support - for both your local hardware and software, but even more importantly, for any of your customer-facing websites and product systems.

If your customer-facing systems go down and you are not able to get speedy technical support from any/all your suppliers, the resultant downtime can effect your marketing campaigns, you can lose or annoy potential customers, and ultimately, your profits will suffer (including your brand, as well).

Technology is the lifeblood of an internet marketing business, and Murphy’s Law being what it is, you must to arrange for the eventual breakdowns and computer crashes that take place as well. Utilitzing all these essential technologies will ensure the success of your affiliate company.
